REMINDERS:
1. Since 09.22.98 Malaysia has introduced currency controls upon entry and exit. Visitors can bring in unlimited amount of foreign currencies but not more than RM1000 in Malaysian currency. They can bring out not more than the amount of currencies they brought in. Prescribed currency declaration form must be filled in upon entry and exit.
2. Since 01.01.99 Malaysia has declared an additional rest day on the first Thursday or Saturday of the month (respectively for States having Friday or Sunday as a public holiday). All government departments and most companies close on that day. ALL BANKS CLOSE on that Thursday or Saturday!

Spring Festival - The Chinese New Year is the first day of the first moon in the lunar calendar. Chinese families host "open house" for relatives and friends. Children love this new year as elders dress them up in new clothes and present them with "red packets" containing money (to signify abundance). Lion dances usher in the new year. Celebrations run until the 15th day.

Seventh Day of the first moon which is everybody's birthday according to Chinese folklore. Ninth day of first moon - Jade Emperor's birthday according to Chinese legend. Chinese of the Hokkien dialect in Penang pray to the Jade Emperor with offerings which must include the traditional sugar canes on the eve of this day, around midnight.

Esplanade: 15th night of Chinese New Year, the first full moon night of the lunar calendar. This marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations, normally celebrated in Penang with an "orange-throwing" event by young girls (to get good husbands) at the sea off Esplanade (sort of Penang's Chinese Valentine's Day) and the traditional Dondang Sayang serenaders going around the island in a gaily decorated bus.
            - THAIPUSAM
(Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor)
Hindu festival of purification. Very elaborately celebrated to honour Lord Murugan during the full moon day in the month of "thai" (which normally falls in the month of January or February). A breathtaking experience to witness devotees pierce their bodies with skewers and hooks, carrying "kavadees" along the streets of Georgetown to the Waterfall Road temple.
The Silver Chariot carrying the idol of Lord Murugan will leave the Queen Street temple one day earlier to be welcomed by devotees breaking coconuts along the procession route and return the day after the actual day starting in the evening.
